Ghana is worth visiting for its friendly people, diverse attractions and the chance to experience many aspects of Africa in one country. The Kumasi area is interesting for travelers who want to experience more than just Accra, safari and beach.
Guests at BWO Hostel often ask what is there to do in our area, which sights are really worth seeing. In this blog I give an overview of the attractions in our area and those in Kumasi, Ashanti. You will also find links to more extensive blog posts about most of the must-see attractions.
Explore Banko and surroundings on foot
In the surroundings of BWO hostel you can do some great hiking. You can do this independently, for example a round trip between the different villages around us. Or a walk to the mountains. Which, by the way, you can also climb. Click here to read more about hiking in our neighborhood!

You can also go for a town tour with our guide. He will tell you all about life in a village like Banko.
Nature parks near Kumasi and BWO Hostel
Bobiri Forest reserve is a butterfly garden near Kubease. The friendly guides at Bobiri Forest will tell you all about the many different trees and butterflies in this forest. In the dry season (November-March), you will see a little less butterflies, as these beautiful creatures love mud immensely.

Bomfobiri WS is a beautiful reserve where you can see all aspects of nature in Ghana in 1 park. From savannah to rainforest. Bomfobiri is a wild life sanctuary, but the chances of seeing wild life are slim. However, this fact certainly does not make the hike any less worthwhile! Read more about Bomfobiri WS.
Visit Kumasi
A visit to Kumasi, Ghana’s second city really can’t be missing from this blog. Learn more about the impressive Ashanti culture and visit the largest covered market in West Africa. Kumasi is a real commercial city. Everywhere you look you see people selling something. I previously wrote an extensive blog about Kumasi, click here to read it!

Ashanti culture and beautiful fabrics
In Odomankoma and Ntonso you will learn all about the beautiful kente fabrics and adinkra characters. The weavers make the most beautiful and intricate patterns at lightning speed. You can also try it yourself! Read more about the beautiful community project Odomankoma

Traditional shrines
In Ghana, traditional religion is still very important. The guides from Banko Women Organization can tell you all about it. You can also visit the sacred memorial sites. Among others Besease shrine that is on the world heritage list of Unesco. Click here for more info on these traditional buildings.
Relaxing or taking a refreshing dip is also possible, of course!
If you mainly want to relax, Banko Women Organization Hostel is also the right place for you. Enjoy delicious food and relax on our terrace in our fine garden! BWO Hostel offers experiences
Many of our guests say that at BWO Hostel we don’t just offer accommodation, we offer a real Ghana experience. And that is exactly our intention! During our fully catered 3 and 4 day Ashanti tour packages, you get the chance to visit all the sights I have described in this blog with our guide who can not only answer all your questions, but also shares a lot of information.
“I recently spent two nights and three days at BWO hostel. They arranged our transportation and organized guided tours for us. They are ecologically minded and working to provide a sustainable model.
The rooms were clean and comfortable with good screens, fans, and mosquito nets. The bathrooms were clean and functional. Only cold water in the shower, but they will provide hot water for washing on request.
There is a common room as well as a wonderful, outdoor covered area for dining and lounging. The extensive garden features native plants and provides a setting that belies the guesthouse’s location on the main road. For those that need to stay connected, there is good wifi.
The food is amazing. Pat and her team can handle just about any food restrictions and she specializes in delicious, vegetarian and vegan dishes using local ingredients. We chose to have a bbq one evening, but they also offer a cooking workshop to learn local cooking techniques and dishes.
Touring – Emmanuel and Ike provided tours to Manhiya Palace, Kejetia Market, and the Cultural Center in Kumasi. We went hiking in Bomfobiri Forest Preserve which is just 20 minutes from the guesthouse and toured a Kente weaving center in Adanwomase.
Banko Women’s Organization – one of the highlights of our visit was touring the local village and seeing the work that Pat and the organization do to support the local community. Proceeds from the Guesthouse help fund trade schools for sewing and hairdressing and cosomotology; cooking seminars to train professional cooks; and fund community improvement projects.
I can’t say enough good things about our experience with BWO. I expect to return”
