THE TWO (2) VOLUNTEER LOCATIONS

At the BWO Learning Center, we offer a safe space for education, meetings, and dialogue. Currently, we run two courses: a sewing workshop and a hairdressing course, both taught by local women for local women. Additionally, we equip our students with essential knowledge on entrepreneurship, health, household management, and resilience skills.

At the BWO Hostel, we not only offer employment to some of our students but also serve as a platform for hospitality training. It’s also where we showcase and sell products crafted by our talented students at the Learning Center. The proceeds from our guests’ stays and tour bookings directly support the Banko Women Organization’s initiatives.

YOUR VOLUNTEER COORDINATOR AND EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF BWO

volunteer in Ghana coordinator Pat with her 2 kids

Hello, I’m Patricia, the founder of this inspiring project, and I’m thrilled to welcome you to our team! I’m originally from the Netherlands. My journey in Ghana started in 2001 and has grown ever since.

Starting this initiative was a burst of energy for me, and I’ve been pleasantly surprised by how rewarding and enjoyable the work has been. The camaraderie among everyone involved is truly uplifting, and the variety of tasks keeps things exciting. Of course, there are administrative challenges, but the positives far outweigh any hurdles.

What brings me immense joy is the opportunity to develop products, showcase and sell them at our guesthouse, fundraise for our cause, witness the progress of our students, and collaborate across two locations. I’m especially proud that we’ve created a sustainable system that harnesses everyone’s unique talents effectively.

As a foreigner joining our project, you can make a meaningful contribution without disrupting the delicate balance we’ve established!

Fantastic Volunteer Experience at Banko Women Organization! I recently spent a month volunteering with Pat and Dorcas at BWO, and it was an incredible experience. I primarily developed and taught classes on business, life skills, and health at the learning center, and I can confidently say that it was one of the most rewarding experiences of my life.

The organization’s commitment to empowering women and fostering entrepreneurship in the local community is truly inspiring. Though my instruction style was not the typical norm the women were used to given the Ghanaian education system, the enrolled women were enthusiastic learners eager to absorb knowledge.

The staff members were incredibly supportive and dedicated, making my role as a volunteer both fulfilling and impactful. That plus the stable internet plus the delicious cuisine at the guesthouse!

Pat also allowed for time to go on a few of her tours she sets up for guests and so I was able to be a tourist every now and again – work hard, play hard. I highly recommend volunteering with this organization to anyone looking to make a meaningful difference and contribute to positive change.
