How did you end up in this place in Ghana, Pat?
&
Why did you start an NGO with an accompanying hostel?

These are the two questions I get asked the most. My name is Patricia Zoer, and I’m from the Netherlands. I run Banko Women Organization with great joy, including the BWO Training Center and BWO Hostel. For me, sustainable tourism—without a negative impact on the local community—is key.

My journey in Banko started as a volunteer. Over the years, I kept coming back on vacation and gradually realized that I wanted to live and work in this beautiful environment. But how could I also make a living?

As a volunteer and later as a traveler, I found that the Kumasi area lacked a welcoming place to relax, meet other people, and enjoy great food. Together with the people around me, I created just that.

BWO Hostel is a wonderful place to unwind after a busy internship in Kumasi or to experience authentic Ghanaian life. On our terrace, you can relax and enjoy the lush garden, the birds and butterflies that visit us, and, of course, fantastic food. We offer guided tours and weekend trips in the area, but you’re also welcome to explore on your own.

To me, it’s only natural that every entrepreneur, no matter where in the world, contributes socially or ethically. And when you’re a white European living in an African country, I believe that responsibility is even greater. That’s why BWO is more than just a hostel—through our training center, we support women in developing professional skills that help them build financial independence. This benefits not only the women themselves but also the community as a whole.

Over time, my role within BWO has evolved. I now focus more on facilitating and guiding, mostly behind the scenes. I’m incredibly grateful for my colleagues, who have taken on the daily operations of the hostel with dedication and care, ensuring our guests feel truly welcome. Let me introduce you to our amazing team, starting with our leadership.

Salomey Afari: A Champion of Independence and Strength

Salomey Afari (28) works as a supervisor at BWO Hostel while awaiting the opportunity to continue her studies in optometry. She brings warmth, courage, and a passion for hospitality to her role. Her journey to overcome shyness and develop strong communication skills was fueled by the encouragement of her sister, who inspired her to persevere even in the face of challenges.

Salomey is driven by a deep desire to help young women in her community stand on their own, without relying on men. She firmly believes in the importance of a career for women, enabling them to support themselves. Her vision is to inspire others to take control of their future and become leaders in their own right.

Maame U – Antwi Eugenia: Cooking Up a Future of Independence

Everyone knows her as Maame U. Antwi Eugenia (20) is a hardworking, funny, and kind young woman with a deep passion for cooking. As the kitchen manager at BWO Hostel, she has developed valuable skills and confidence. She not only masters traditional Ghanaian dishes but also learns to prepare international meals like lasagna. With her sense of humor and positive personality, she brings joy to the kitchen every day.

Eugenia dreams of becoming a professional chef and opening her own restaurant, where both local and international cuisine take center stage. To her, independence means a life of freedom, a commitment to learning, and the pursuit of her dreams.
